sir,

Green Island Cement Company, Ltd.

Hongkong, 29th September, 1914.

With reference to your letter dated the 23rd instant,

No.4373/03 Pt.II and the suggestion of H.B.M.Minister that we should waive our claim against the Chinese Government for losses owing to the embargo on limestone, in consideration of their temporarily exempting limestone from taxation, or granting us other advantages, we have the honour to state that we would be prepared to consider favourably any proposals on these lines.

The Consul-General in Canton made a suggestion in his

despatch to the Tutuh dated 19th May, 1914, copy of which was sent to us on the 18th that limestone be supplied to us free, equival-

ent to the value of our claim, and we wrote to him under date of

26th May approving of this suggestion.

Until now we have heard nothing more on the subject.

As an alternative to this proposal we would suggest with-

that out prejudice to our claim rr the difficulty could be met by the

Chinese Government giving us the right to quarry limestone free of

charge at the Fei Shu Ngam Quarry in the Fah Yuen District and

waiving any export duty on the stone until the amount claimed had been made good.

We would take the liberty of pointing out that this

quarry was originally opened by our late Compradore with money

advanced by us and the authorities confiscated it as well as our

plant, light railway, etc. some years ago and gave it to the Canton

Cement Works.

We believe there is ample stone of good quality at this quarry to supply both factories and owing to the situation of the Fei Shu Ngam Quarry, stone can be brought down by boats all the year round, thus ensuring a regular and economical supply.

Honourable

The Colonial Secretary,

Hongkong.
